“Anya Tish Gallery is pleased to present, TITLE, the fourth solo exhibition by Budapest artist, Árpád Forgó, featuring all new
works reaffirming his dynamic presence in the international art scene.
Forgó’s distinctive practice explores geometric abstraction through meticulously constructed canvases that blur the boundaries between painting and sculpture. By manipulating form, light, and shadow, his compositions create striking optical effects that invite viewers to engage with shifting perspectives and spatial depth. Drawing on traditional painting techniques, Forgó builds his canvases by stretching and folding them into angular, multi-dimensional forms. This process results in dynamic surfaces that harness natural light, casting dramatic shadows and producing ever-changing visual experiences. Inspired by the Hungarian neo-avant-garde movement, Forgó masterfully balances minimalism with vibrant color and precise geometry. By utilizing what the artist calls “illusory drift” as a visual tool to prompt a reading of the works, Forgó questions how we look, perceive, and reveal the physical aspects of space, providing an opportunity for visitors to connect with Forgó's compelling body of work.
From the Artist:
The exhibited artworks, mainly from my Zigzag series, are all built from parallelogram-shaped modules I have been working
with since 2018. In my earlier work, the constellation of modules resulted in various geometrical forms within the piece itself; however, the Zigzag series focuses on the silhouette – a sculptural ridge. In these biochromatic pieces, the contour is further emphasized by the different colors emerging on the fringes, with a palette ranging from subtle pale peach and vivid greens to powerful deep purple. My experimentation with different compound painting processes challenges the viewer’s perception: what is it that they are looking at – metal, ceramics, or plastic? I strive for simplicity, not through reduction but through construction.
