March 2 - April 2, 2025
From landSPACE:
“landSPACE: a kunsthalle, a private art space in East Austin, Texas, will present a solo exhibition of works by Austin-based artist Cliona Gunter, opening Sunday, March 2, 2025 and on view through April 2, 2025. A reception with the artist is planned for Sunday, March 2 from 2:00 – 5:00pm. Further showings by appt.
I first came across Cliona’s work on Instagram as pure serendipity…I can’t even remember which exact image I saw, but it was the texture of the work that grabbed me and immediately went to her feed…then I went to her website…each piece struck me again and again…the quality of line, the colors and then, the titles…a gut punch that makes you laugh because the reference is so clear…and there is no surface or object that cannot be pressed into service of expression…broom heads, N95 boxes, a curbside waste bin, the garage at her partner’s home…I consider it a joy and a gift when she sends me each new image of works in process…I am thrilled to present her work at landSPACE…
“Painting is daily necessity, a time and place to connect to something larger, a place to self soothe and discover. Uncertainty and pain is tolerable with daily creation. Having a morning exploration on cotton rag, canvas or a wood panel makes uncertainty, world chaos, national/state local events bearable. A trusted friend says it’s an act of creation and exorcism. Shock can be contained in a four by six foot panel; it ends up in a series of small purses and breasts or rough teeth shapes. The world undiluted often feels bad and painting makes it manageable. Working through deeper feelings of grief and the realities of caring for two aging parents, who’ve surrendered their autonomy, informs much of my work as I process and witness that journey. Many of my titles are as important as the work itself. It’s another layer of conversation I am often unable to have with anyone so I must have it with myself.”

About landSPACE: a kunsthalle
A kunsthalle is a facility that mounts temporary art exhibitions, similar to an art gallery. It is distinct from an art museum by not having a permanent collection. The term kunsthalle is a loanword from the German Kunsthalle, a compound noun formed by combining the two nouns Kunst (art) and Halle (hall).
