“As an artist, I spend time making paintings and objects. Sometimes it goes well and sometimes it does not.”
Derrick White is an art professor and the art department chair teaching painting and art appreciation at Tyler Junior College, where he has worked since 2001. Derrick has exhibited his art regionally and nationally in more than one hundred exhibitions and has been recognized with six best-in-show awards. “I am constantly working on my art and taking ideas and inspirations from my daily life and the world around me. I am motivated by the unstructured results of actions and the inherent nature of materials, for example, paint drips or the flow of a wood grain.” Born in the Texas panhandle, Derrick later grew up in the Dallas area. White earned both a Master of Fine Arts degree and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Texas in Denton.
Texas contemporary art independent curator Leslie Moody Castro has stated, “Talking with Derrick and seeing his practice was a welcome relief, balancing the life of an educator, and being an artist with a professional practice is difficult, and Derrick is not just practicing but he is also shaping careers.”
