From the Galveston Artist Residency:
“The Last Sky: Looking for Ghosts by Juan Juarez includes 10 works that will be on view in the GAR Gallery small projects space as well as the main gallery space. About this body of work, Juarez writes:
Currently, my work investigates the Mexican American borderland specifically South Texas where I was born and raised. I am interested in the fluidity of the border between the United States and Mexico; how a frontier once permeable has become forcibly rigid through political intervention. Most of my images focus on the history of South Texas revealed through abandoned buildings and other geographical sites. My photographs function as a palimpsest of how South Texas looks now coupled with my dissolving memory of the past.
My approach to images develops out of an intersection between inherent meaning and conceptual translation navigated by painting sensibilities. The intersection between photography and painting creates a state of hybridity, a critical platform, connected to our contemporary immersion with images. My studio practice employs photography, painting, collage, video, installation, and digital mediation in broad terms.
Juan Juarez has exhibited in galleries and museums such as the Milwaukee Art Museum (Milwaukee), Haggerty Museum of Art (Milwaukee), Palazzo Trevisan degli Ulivi & Rio Terra San Vio (Venice), Aspex Gallery (Portsmouth), Los Angeles Center for Digital Art (Los Angeles), Everson Museum of Art (Syracuse), and Gallery 400 at University of Illinois-Chicago (Chicago).”
