From Blind Creek Alley:
“In her work, the artist Max Marshall questions how mainstream mythologies influence everyday contemporary life, and why specific mythologies persevere over others. This investigation is evident in the symbolic yet familiar choices of Marshall’s nightmarish installation with its slowly rocking horse and single hanging light bulb in a thoughtfully yet disturbingly delineated space that borrows from the universal while touching on the personal. Using the unique architecture of Blind Alley as both window and container, creeeeeak positions the viewer as a witness to the ghostly phenomenon happening within the space. As Marshall explains, “Playing off the horror trope of the haunted toy, the work chases the mix of anxiety and pleasure that comes with the traversal of a haunted house or the telling of a scary story. In this way, creeeeeak spotlights ghost stories and urban legends, exploring their role as cautionary tales and acknowledging their larger cultural significance as a form of contemporary American folklore.”
Artist Bio Max Marshall is an artist, curator, and educator based in Fort Worth, Texas. She received a Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art with an emphasis in Sculpture from Texas Christian University in 2024.”
