From 500X:
“Comfort Creatures” is an ongoing series of drawing paintings and soft sculptures created by Dallas Smith. Through these various works Dallas aims to give shape and character to various feelings of wonder, nostalgia, anxiety, and isolation. In his own words “A comfort creature is a spirit that we create when engaging with and expressing these emotions. Once living as residents of our souls the creatures now manifest physically, serving as comforting reminders of individual growth and change.”
Through the medium of rug making Dallas attempts to highlight an optimistic ideal that we all hold the capacity to return to these manifested spirits of our thoughts and emotions with a newfound sense of compassion and acceptance.
Dallas Smith, born in American Fork Utah and raised in the city of Dallas spent the formative years of his life living in the downtown area of the city where both the urban street art and curated museums made lasting imprints on his practice. Dallas graduated with a BFA in New Media Arts from the University of North Texas in December of 2021. His practice consists of a mix of both traditional and digital art making processes that pull primarily from surrealist imagery and illustrative animated forms. Dallas’s work has been showcased in B – Space art Gallery as well as being featured in the Greater Denton arts Councils “30 under 30” exhibition in 2021.
