September 18 - October 26, 2023
From the Wright Gallery:
“Wright Gallery presents Caracas Moderna by Venezuelan artist Marian Ichaso Lefeld. The solo exhibition explores notions of place and belonging through video and painting surrounding the artist’s memories of modern architecture in Caracas. From a migrant’s perspective, the artist grapples with the shift of Caracas’s beauty and its recent chaos. The exhibition is on view September 18th through October 26th, 2023, at Wright Gallery in Texas A&M University’s School of Architecture and School of Performance, Visualization & Fine Arts. The artist presents an artist talk on October 26th, 2023 from 1:30 – 2:30 pm with a closing reception 2:30 – 4 pm.
Investigating a personal narrative through abstract painting, the artist expresses her thoughts surrounding her country of origin. Formal elements in Ichaso Lefeld’s paintings reflect the artist’s memory of Caracas, with intense color referencing the bright light of the northern hemisphere. The artist’s family moved to the capital city from a nearby small town in 1983, the year of the inaugural subway system. Exploring the city by subway and urban streets as a teenager, the artist recalls contrasts between the geographic landscape and architecture. Abstract shape, color, and line references city planning and architectural elements in her paintings. The paintings are autobiographical and layered with the artist’s ideas of belonging, immigration, and contemplation of Caracas’ modern architecture as a reflection of economic and socio-political histories.
