From Texas Christian University:
“Moncrief Cancer Institute, in conjunction with the Texas Christian University (TCU) School of Art, presents Migrations, featuring new work by TCU Professor of Art Chris Powell and curated by Melissa Sztuk (TCU MA Art History, 2023).
Migrations is part of Powell’s larger project, Movement in Three Parts, exhibited in three separate art spaces across Fort Worth. Each exhibition explores a different aspect of the concept of movement. As the objects evoke movement, the viewer mirrors them by moving through the three spaces, and the pieces then merge with them as a memory they carry.
Through carefully installed drawings and hand-formed clay animals, Powell uses animal migration as a metaphor for humans as they move through their life. The different seasons of the year bring new challenges and possibilities for these animals, just as each new season of our lives brings the same. Images of two constants of Powell’s early life on the ranch, bulls and birds, are used throughout the exhibition. Movement is important in the lives of each of these animals, both in daily flight and pasture rotation as in long-term migration and historical cattle drives. In parallel, we as humans move through our own individual journeys, both in the day-to-day and the larger picture. Migrations seeks to highlight the value of those journeys we take.
As the animals in the show move through their migrations, they pause in this space. As part of Powell’s production and Sztuk’s curation of the artworks, viewers are encouraged to take time to pause and be present in the space that surrounds them as they migrate through the gallery.”
