“Houston-based filmmaker and visual artist, Cressandra Thibodeaux, announces the opening of her new photography exhibition, PORTRAITS OF MY MOTHER, at G-Gallery in Houston’s Historic Heights District. The exhibition will run from May 6th through May 27th, with an opening reception on May 6th from 6-8PM.
PORTRAITS OF MY MOTHER is a unique and intimate series of photographs that explore themes of beauty, ageism, and the medical system’s shortcomings. Thibodeaux captures the essence of her mother, Marilyn, through a series of evocative portraits that reveal the complex and often overlooked aspects of aging.
G-Gallery is known for showcasing emerging and established artists who challenge convention. Its owner and artist, Wayne Gilbert, describes the gallery as a space for cultural exchange with a grassroots approach. The gallery’s exhibitions feature eclectic and often provocative work by artists from around the world. Located in the heart of Houston’s Historic Heights District, G-Gallery provides a comfortable space to engage with art and connect with others.
Cressandra Thibodeaux is an award-winning filmmaker and visual artist who holds an MFA from Columbia University’s Film program. She has produced, directed, and edited numerous documentaries, short films, and commercials. Her first solo show, “Oil on Water,” was exhibited at Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland in 2010. In 2018, she received a MacDowell Colony Fellowship and Rockefeller grant to develop her photo exhibit, My Box Series, which addressed issues of reproductive rights.
In addition to her work in the arts, Thibodeaux is a tribal member of the Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, Ojibwas and has worked in tribal law. In 2010, she founded 14 Pews, a microcinema in Houston, which has allowed her to become a community leader and activist. As Executive Director of 14 Pews, Thibodeaux has curated 12 art shows highlighting Houston artists and directed five award-winning documentaries on Houston artists.
