From Bill Arning Exhibitions:
“During a period of therapy when I reflected on my adult identity status, my therapist introduced me to the word “non-normative.” Afterward, I learned to own the word “weird” which had been thrown at me during some crucial developmental stages in my childhood identity formation. Suddenly, being weird was empowering. These drawings index a three-year meditation on the memories that have made an impression on me – and likely contributed to my weirdness or non-normativity, whatever that means: my sexual orientation and attractions to both men and women and my interest with genitalia, as well as my perspectives on life, death, and my own reality. The introspective form of drawing at this life stage has allowed me to go deeper into my personal journey to self acceptance.”
