November 3 - December 10, 2022
From the Neidorff Art Gallery:
“The Neidorff Art Gallery at Trinity University is pleased to present Duncan Ganley: Inventory of Empty Streets on view November 3 – December 10, 2022. The artist will be present for the opening reception Thursday, November 3rd from 4-6pm.
Inventory of Empty Streets is a photographic project that documents every street inside central London’s Congestion Charge Zone during the UK’s first COVID-19 lockdown in the spring of 2020.
Each photograph, shot identically, presents a view of a cityscape void of people, cars and congestion, capturing the shuttered retail and entertainment hub of London’s West End, the unpopulated residential roads north and south of the River Thames, and the eerily empty global financial center of the City of London. Ganley provides a photographic typology of the lockdown and explores the dissonance between the cinematic reading of the image and the very real anxieties during the pandemic.
With approximately 3000 images and accompanying GPS and tracking metadata, Inventory of Empty Streets is a unique visual record of a city under extraordinary circumstances. This exhibition will include select photographs, a 26-hour projection and twelve volumes of artist’s books.
Duncan Ganley is an artist/filmmaker based in London. His films and photographic work have been shown internationally, notably at the Blanton Museum of Art, Austin, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and the Plains Art Museum, Fargo, ND. Select film screenings include: the 14th London Short Film Festival, ICA, London; NMASS, Austin; Artpace, San Antonio; and Museum de Art Moderno, Medellin, Columbia. He is currently Senior Lecturer in Photography and Fine Art at Cambridge School of Art, Anglia Ruskin University, UK. He is the co-editor of the book ‘Re:Print,’ 2018, published by Marmalade Publishers of Visual Theory, London.”
