From Common Space:
“COMMON SPACE is proud to present our latest Window Space exhibition featuring the works of Celica Ledema & Maggie Lyon
Celica Ledesma was born and raised in Houston, Tx. She is currently an Austin, Tx based visual artist with a BFA in Studio Art from Texas State University.
Due to my African American and Mexican American upbringing the process of examining my own personal identity is complicated by the cultural and historical influences I’ve encountered. This examination becomes more difficult when trying to find a space for a visibly black, intersectional woman. Constantly finding myself in the in-between my work stems from personal experiences, relationships with others, and reality. Reflection, comfort, and the multitudes o identity are found in interdimensional escapism and the alternate reality that unknowingly surrounds us. While trying to master realistic figurative painting I place my subject matters in a creative space with vibrant color palettes, fluid backgrounds, and transparent elements. In addition to my stories and observations, I attempt to give a transcendental experience while pairing content involving social critique and metaphysical themes.
Maggie Lyon is an artist and curator based in Austin, Tx. She grew up in Fort Worth, TX and earned her BFA in studio art from Texas State University in 2019 with a concentration in Painting and a minor in Fashion Merchandising. Lyons work was displayed in the duo exhibition, End in the Beginning, at ArtUs Co in April 2021 and was recently featured in Almost Real Thins Magazine Issue 23: Ultra Super Plus. Lyon is passionate about connecting artists to opportunities and resources that will cultivate their professional career; she served as the Program Director at ArtUs Co, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit arts organization, managing the gallery, studios, and workshop programming, and is Curating Director at Art Direct in Austin, TX
