From Texas State Galleries:
“The Texas State Galleries are pleased to present Illusions of Reverie, a group exhibition featuring 18 artists within the School of Fine Arts and Design. These artists are working across various media such as painting, sculpture, video, photography, and drawing. From a wide variety of how and what gets brought to life, the interconnection between community and purpose are more than highlighted within this group. While the represented artists and their work vary greatly in media and concept, the theme of a daydream, or rather reverie, ties them all together. All of these artists are allowing themselves to be vulnerable by creating and sharing works about what they daydream about, about what they think about when they are lost in thought. Several of these artists are making work that explore difficult to express and intimate ideas like mental health, immigration, absence, identity, and gentrification. While the latter, about lighter or more uplifting themes like family, nostalgia, exploration, and culture. However, reverie inherently means being pleasantly lost in one’s thoughts. This is where illusion comes into play. For some, the illusion is that of pleasantness or ease when the work actually represents something darker or difficult to process. While for others, that illusion is of a happier world or capturing moments that are long gone. Combining these two words creates a contradiction being that one is pleasant and the other a lie, but it also repeats the idea of something created in the mind. These artists are sharing their own intimate perceptions, but the work itself is creating entirely new perceptions, day dreams, and illusions simply by being viewed by you. Among these exhibiting artists are Ashley Amyx, a multimedia artist exploring watercolor and controlled burning, Alejandra Gonzalez-Zertuche, a painter exploring the immigration experience in the U.S., Alex Renbarger, a painter discussing introspection through the mundane and repetition, Alondra Garcia, a multimedia artists making work on her family and identity, Brittany Zuehlke, a painter working with 3D elements and neon colors, Calpurnia Mariposa, a interdisciplinary artist exploring themes of illusion and memory, Cameron Rainer, a photographer exploring mental health in relationships, Elise Cantu, a painter focusing on the gentrification in San Antonio, Iliana Ramirez, a photographer exploring her identity through her family, Jaden McCreary, a drawer exploring the black experience, Jessica Urbizu, a multimedia artist exploring themes of diversity and women, Kathryn Fletcher, a photographer using self portraits to explore mental health, Kiana Reyes, a mixed media artist exploring mental health, adolescence, and growing up with an afab body, Makenna Hatter, a painter exploring the human experience, Max Bridges, a printmaker using food to comment on people’s identity, Michelle Miller, a ceramics artist exploring family and her Mexican heritage, Ray Marquez, a video artist exploring emotions, humans, and animal nature, and Teri Cruz, a painter using paint on 3D elements.
