Alexis Marie Ramos: Recetas Remedios, y Raíces “Folk Renidies del Valle del Rio Grande”

“Come explore how UTRGV MFA Candidate imbues the gallery space with the magic of South Texas folk medicine.

Artist Alexis Marie Ramos invites you to her MFA Candidate Graduate Exhibition “Recetas, Remedios, y Raíces Opening Reception Friday, April 29, 2022, 6:00-9:00 pm. The works will be hosted by the UTRGV Visual Arts Charles and Dorothy Clark Gallery located at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Edinburg Campus, 1201 W University Dr, Edinburg Texas (956) 665-3480. Don’t miss how Ramos explores the local culturas’ relationships with food, religion, folk medicine, and the kitchen curanderas who pass on these traditions. Ramos is focusing on creating an archive of how local Latinos of the region heal the home, the family, and even how commercial objects are imbued with folk magic. Ramos explores the border where food and folk medicine blur. Drawing inspiration from the Valley many of her sculptures, installations, and paintings, illustrate the remedies used to treat these culture-bound syndromes. Ramos’s research is about the preservation of the oral traditions and hopes to create a visual archive of how local Latinos heal the home, family, and how commercial objects are imbued with folk magic. Many ingredients from backyards are used as both medicine and essential sustenance.
