“Dr. Kathy Bussert-Webb will hold her MFA thesis exhibition March 23-April 1 2022, at UTRGV, Art Annex Gallery, 2412 S. Closner, Edinburg, Tx. Her opening reception is Friday, March 25, 5-9 pm. Performance art and socially engaged art will be part of this reception, as well as Hungarian gulyas. Kathy’s exhibit, “Glorious Food, Glorious Earth,” explores Kathy’s food memories as a second-generation American. The UTRGV gallery website is

Food sits at the centerpiece of Kathy’s interdisciplinary practice, which explores gender, abuse, health, consumption, and farm animals. Kathy’s refugee mother experienced food insecurity, which she projected by having kathy and her five siblings eat until stuffed. Growing up with a polyglot Hungarian mother and teaching literacy methods in the Rio Grande Valley, TX, inform her hybrid art practices, such as creating assemblage, including poetry and dialogue, and translanguaging (combining languages, such as Hungarian and English).
Kathy invites participants to use their senses when interacting with her work, like smelling bacon, opening doors, rattling soft sculptures, and turning pages of a children’s book the size of a twin mattress. Kathy incorporates a range of materials for installations, performance art, and socially engaged art. For instance, she used resin in three installations to signify a toxic childhood experience. She also upcycles materials because she hoards and improvises, like her late mother. For instance, in the tapestry/banner Us, Kathy incorporates leather from a ripped couch cushion, which she had saved after replacing the cushion 10 years ago. In conclusion, Kathy is an interdisciplinary artist focused on food memories.”
