From Texas State Galleries:
“NOW ON VIEW @ TXST FLEX SPACE Israel Alejandro Medina’s Buena Broma unpacks the prevalence of la broma (a kind of prank or joke) within Mexican-American culture, through a specific memory from the artist’s childhood—when his father opened the door to his room, made monster sounds, scratched at the walls, and pulled on the blanket. Assuming the intruder was the devil—the only evil he knew—Medina was convinced that he would die. “I flashed my own life before my eyes,” and for the first time he visualized the friends and family that he loved, “one last time in my head.” Medina considers the conjuring of these pictures to be his first artistic act and only now appreciates his father’s jest. The installation currently on view explores recreating, reappropriating, but most importantly, redefining and processing the “buena broma.””
