September 12 - November 6, 2021
From the organizers:
“The eclectic, exciting work of Raul Rene Gonzalez, chosen by a national panel of jurors as the venerable San Antonio Art League’s Artist of the Year, will be on exhibit at the Art League’s Gallery Home in the King William Historical District beginning on September 12.
Gonzalez is a multidisciplinary artist who incorporates an astonishingly wide range of mediums and methods in his paintings, drawings, sculptures, clothing, murals, installations, live and recorded dance and other performance-based work. Largely autobiographical in nature, his work explores topics such as fatherhood, gender roles, labor, identity, pop culture and abstraction.
Caroline and Tony Grant, Co-Founders of the Sustainable Arts Foundation, describe his work this way: “It is hard to stay still in the presence of these exuberant pieces, but the pleasure of his art is in both the motion and the stillness: it invites us into his household, quiet construction scenes, colorful boogie-mats. Where often we see contrast and tension—work/family, artist/subject, image/performance—Gonzalez softens boundaries and finds coherence. To see his work is to see him work, not drudgingly but in a joyous meta-blur of creation.”
Gonzalez’s work has been featured widely throughout Texas and the United States, averaging one major solo exhibition a year in addition to numerous group or two-person shows. His work is included in the permanent collections of the National Mexican Museum of Art (Chicago, IL), the National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum (Albuquerque, NM), Mexic-Arte Museum (Austin, TX), the McNay Art Museum (San Antonio, TX), the University of Texas at San Antonio, and the City of San Antonio, among others. In addition, Gonzalez has received artist grants from the Luminaria Artist Foundation, Sustainable Arts Foundation, National Association of Latino Arts and Culture, Dave Bown Projects and the Surdna Foundation.
Gonzalez earned his M.F.A. from the University of Texas at San Antonio and a B.F.A. in painting from the University of Houston. He is currently represented by grayDUCK Gallery, a contemporary art gallery in Austin, TX.
