ABOUT SoA CAMP
Created by David Politzer and Sixto Wagan, SoA CAMP places UH School of Art students in assistant positions with Houston artists and designers who identify as Black, Indigenous and/or People of Color. These positions expand professional horizons for students, embedding them in the daily workings of practicing artist/mentors and creating a mentored introduction into professional networks that will serve students post-graduation.
The program is designed in direct response to listening circles conducted with SoA graduates. In particular, the alumni referenced a need for more exposure to non-white frames of reference, expanding the curriculum to better reflect the diversity of the student body. Alumni and graduates expressed that these efforts would lead to a stronger support structure for current BIPOC students.
Now in it’s second year, SoA CAMP is funded by Cougar Initiative to Engage (CITE). CITE is the University of Houston’s Quality Enhancement Plan to increase the number of high-impact co-curricular learning activities and the number of undergraduate students participating in these activities. Co-curricular learning activities provide students with direct real-world experience, preparing them for success in their lives and careers. CITE is an opportunity to have a truly transformative impact on students and the broader university community.
ABOUT THE SCHOOL OF ART
At the UH School of Art, we celebrate the centrality of art and design as drivers of culture and recognize their importance to the vitality of a civil society. We train artists, designers, and art historians who will delight, surprise, inform, engage, and move us toward a better understanding of each other and our extended communities. We do this by making a commitment to connect the creativity of art to the practice of citizenship. We equip our students with strategies and tools for making and living in ways that value diverse human expression, ethics, and social engagement.”
