From TASI Gallery:
“Brief description: Beaumont artist Kevin Clay focuses on the intersection of people and food in his oil paintings. Creating a visual feast inspired by the world of competitive hotdog eating, Clay paints the American icon with an attuned understanding of portraiture, landscape and abstraction. The concept for the series was sparked by Joey Chesnut’s record-breaking consumption of 74 hot dogs in 10 minutes at the 2018 Nathan Hot Dog Eating Contest. Between the pandemic, Chesnut’s new record of 75 hot dogs in 2020 and switching from oil to acrylic gouache and back to oil again, Clay’s series has resulted in 164 total works. The majority of the works are small scale, individual hotdog portraits with several large-scale pieces exploring the abstract qualities of the weenies and buns. Other paintings stack hotdogs on top of each other, waiting for the hand of a competitive eater to grab and scarf down with ferocity. Clay’s HOTDOG! invites viewers to both delight in a Coney Island classic and perhaps question deeply engrained values and glorification of overconsumption in American culture.”
