From 100West Residency:
“Corsicana Artist & Writer Residency is hosting its last Open Studios of the season Saturday May 29 from noon to 4 p.m. Located 50 miles south of Dallas, our intimate residency program affords artists and writers creative re-use of preserved architectural sites in historic downtown Corsicana. Before the residency closes for the summer, view new works from May’s artists Raychael Stine, Rehab El Sadek, and Jake Davidson.
Back in her home of Texas for the first time in several years, painter Raychael Stine continues to deftly elude formal definition. In the 100 West building’s 2nd-floor studio, Stine composes her abstract paintings hiding whimsical images of dogs on vintage postcards that conjure feelings of nostalgia and longing. Stine uses the essence of the original object and her own experiences and desires to craft new works layered with the nuances of time and intention, ecstasy and joy.
Experimental filmmaker Jake Davidson, in residence in the 3rd floor studio of 100 West, just completed a six-month residency in Taoyuan, Taiwan, documenting a proprietary method of contact lens manufacturing in an unmarked building. Interested in the intricacies of light, projection, representation, and distortion, Davidson asks what kinds of optical experiences are on the horizon. For him, the implications are vast— “the distance of violence can grow further away as screen images of violence come closer…it is important for artists to think deeper about the various shapes of virtual presence instead of treating them as exterior equipment.”
Austin-based installation artist Rehab El Sadek, is reconstructing ruins, imagining the powerful possibilities that still exist inside the spaces that remain with us. Enchanted by the residency’s newest studio site, the Samuels building, and its similarities to structures in the metropolises of her native Egypt, El Sadek is busy transforming the 2nd floor studio into a haunting installation that borrows from global architecture to build new futures out of the past. This is the first time the Samuel’s building will be open to the public.
Across the street from 100 West at Anteroom Gallery, sculptor Jay Sullivan’s exhibit Architectures of the Body is also on display through summer. The objects and forms invite touch as much as contemplation. Be sure to view the large death pots cast locally in Corsicana.
Next weekend’s Open Studios is particularly special, as Corsicana Artist & Writer Residency will also be opening our brand new bookstore and programming space, Storefront. For over a year, residency staff have been working diligently to restore and outfit this 1920s former photography studio into a shared home for resident work and community engagement. Join us at Storefront and peruse the intriguing books penned and translated by our writers-in-residence.
Corsicana Artist & Writer Residency encourages visitors to take a campus tour of all our new sites and studios spread throughout historic downtown Corsicana this Memorial Day Weekend. Find out more information at www.corsicanaresidency.org/openstudios. We can’t wait to see you there. “
