January 31 - March 22, 2020
“The Woodworking Exhibit,” featuring wood creations from six local artists and will showcase everything from fine hand-made furniture to whimsical carvings. Long before paper, canvas or metal, wood was probably man’s first art material, and these artists definitely have a wonderful showcase of work to share with the area.
The artists with work represented in this show are Nevin Anderson, Will Armstrong, Mark Cooke, Chip Dence, David Smith and Taylor Starkey. They share a combined 230-plus years of woodworking experience, some of them starting as early as their childhood years. Nevin Anderson has been woodworking for 40 years, and is mostly self-taught. He mostly works with Cherry, Walnut and Mahogany. Will Armstrong started out building wooden crates for his father’s moving company, but 15 years ago on a trip to Paris, he saw a sculpture of a five-foot tall wooden fish being hugged by a woman. He knew when he got home, he would make a wooden fish. A lot of his wood comes from oak trees that are in is yard. Mark Cooke began by disassembling apple crates and crafting them into his own creations, and then moved on to making furniture for his own home as a newlywed, and has continued his love of woodworking throughout his life. His favorite woods in recent years are from the Victoria area – red oak, mesquite and pecan. Chip Dence has been creating “woodpile” furniture and works of art since childhood. His featured piece in the show is his own carving bench made from a cypress tree that stood along Main Street near Spring Creek. Taylor Starkey uses wood turning as a creative escape and a way to relax. He starts with a freshly cut tree, and using chain saw and lathes, he fashions it into beautiful vessels. He believes the beauty of each piece is the unique grain and color of each piece.
