From Lydia Street Gallery:
“One of Austin’s creative couples is back for their exhibition, appropriately titled, “Apotheosis” as they are certainly at their peaks. It signifies profound transformation into one’s highest or truest form. While they may not be turning into gods, they have most definitely developed their respective visions.
Thornberry’s paintings are “about shapes, shadows, and light.” McCarty allows for a paradox in technique and theme – from studied pictorials of beauty to her more emotive musings referencing her life, her musical visions, and her dreams. The title also references Kathy’s upcoming album, which she will perform after the Talk. Thornberry is not only a painter but a poet. He will grace us with readings of recent work. Join us in celebrating these originals at their best!
Kathy McCarty
BIO
Kathy McCarty is an Austin, Texas-based musician and painter, known for her significant contributions to the music scene, particularly in the 1980s and 1990s. Born in 1961 in Stamford, Connecticut, McCarty’s musical journey began with her involvement in the band Buffalo Gals from 1981 to 1983. She then became a founding member and co-leader of the band Glass Eye, which was active until its disbandment in 1993. Glass Eye was notable for its art-rock style, contributing to the interesting and diverse music scene in Austin during that time.
After Glass Eye disbanded, McCarty shifted her focus to a solo career, notably recording an album of covers by songwriter Daniel Johnston titled “Dead Dog’s Eyeball: Songs of Daniel Johnston,” released in 1994. This album was produced by her former Glass Eye bandmate Brian Beattie and received positive reviews for its imaginative interpretation of Johnston’s work. One of the songs from this album, “Living Life,” was included in the soundtrack of the film “Before
Sunrise” (1995). Her cover of Johnston’s song “Rocketship” was also featured in the animated TV show “Futurama” and the 2022 Richard Linklater film “Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood.”
Another notable album from McCarty is “Another Day in the Sun,” released in 2005, which continued to showcase her art-rock roots and lyrical acumen. In 2020, McCarty remained active in the music scene, playing curated shows, including Johnston tributes, and recording new material. She also performed in Los Angeles for a tribute/benefit show for the Lovin’ Spoonful.
Throughout her career, Kathy McCarty has been recognized for her unique contribution to the indie music scene, blending elements of alternative rock with a distinct singer-songwriter style. Her work, particularly her interpretations of Daniel Johnston’s songs, has been praised for its depth, creativity, and emotional resonance, garnering a top 10 album recognition in ART FORUM International Magazine.
