“Rahul Mitra explores urbanization at the cost of natural habitat. Based on his recent travels and work in Hyderabad, India, his current show reflects his take on the global environmental damage, interwoven with his personal narratives of class, economic and social disparities. The paintings in the show are also influenced by his literary work of fiction, the Sons of Nakara, and his Pushcart Prize-nominated short stories.
Rahul Mitra is an artist, writer, and scientist. He has shown his work in 30 solo and 100 group shows in contemporary art Museums, galleries, art spaces, and art fairs in the USA, India, France, Greece, Italy, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Peru, Mexico, Turkey, and Egypt. In addition to his studio practice, he is engaged in his creation, Box City – a collaborative project with marginalized communities in cities across the world. These collaborations include Centre Pompidou, and 9th Concept in Paris; Juxtopoz Studio Residency, Marseille; Turin, Italy; Bard College, Berlin; Portland Museum of Art, Maine; Khirki Village, Delhi; Project Row Houses, Houston; Lawndale Art Center, Houston; Station Museum, Houston; Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum, San Antonio; Michelle Grabner’s Poor Farm, Wisconsin; Hardesty Art Center, Tulsa; Bradley University Illinois.
Mitra was an artist in residence at Project Row Houses, Houston; Portland Museum of Art, Maine, and Juxtapoz Studio Residency, Marseille. His work has been reviewed in 27 publications, in the USA, Europe, and India; and in 10 TV shows and blogs. He is one of the artists selected for the New American Paintings, issue 150 in 2020. His work is in 35 collections in the USA; London, Paris, Berlin, and Serbia in Europe; Hyderabad and Delhi in India; Fiji; Trinidad; Malaysia.”
