March 4 - April 29, 2023
From Foltz Fine Art:
“Beginning on March 4th, 2023, Foltz Fine Art presents Recent Works by Otis Huband. Huband (b. 1933) was born in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and started his undergraduate degree at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1955 after returning from naval service. In 1956 Huband traveled west to California with the intention of reaching San Francisco or Los Angeles. Due to a broken car axel, Huband found himself in Ventura, where he enrolled in Junior College and began his formal training in studio art and art education. Huband returned to Virginia Commonwealth University in 1957, and graduated with his Master’s in Fine Arts in 1961. Two years after graduating, Huband and his wife, Anne, boarded a boat and set sail for Italy; the pair settled in Perugia where Huband studied art at the Accademia di Bella Arti. Huband and his wife left Italy in 1965 and set course for Texas, where they have since resided. Rather than immediately catapulting himself into the Houston gallery scene, Huband turned to his studio where all of his Italian influences- Caravaggio, the Florentine School, religious iconography- and other European artists including Willem De Kooning, Pablo Picasso, and Henri Matisse, inspired his works on canvas. Huband’s works, most typically oil stick on canvas, incorporate oil pigments that are simultaneously vibrant and subdued, figural and abstracted, structured and fluid. His compositions poetically represent a constant manipulation of the human figure and two-dimensional space. Recent works by Otis Huband features selected works created by Huband over the last ten years. Though the works are recent productions, they nevertheless reflect Huband’s lifelong commitment to reflection, learning, and evolving as an artist. Recent Works by Otis Huband is on display at Foltz Fine Art from March 4th to April 29th, 2023. “
