From Catherine Couturier Gallery:
“Catherine Couturier Gallery is delighted to present our upcoming exhibition Fresco, with artist Catherine Erb. Fresco is Erb’s first solo exhibition in Houston. Catherine Erb is a self-taught fine-art photographer from Memphis, Tennessee. Her fascination with photography began in the 80s when she gained access to a camera and darkroom at boarding school. Since then, she’s been using her camera to journal visually. After high school, Erb moved to Europe to work with photographers for several years before returning to Memphis. Back home, she continued to expand her artistic practice—making her own pigment prints and attempting new printing techniques, such as adding encaustic wax and pigments to her images. This allowed her to create more extensive, conceptual bodies of work that capture a spirit of the sublime in everyday life. Her process is meditative, exploring and revealing the radiance of the present moment and the complexities of relationships among people, places, things, and things unseen. There is a little break in time after something comes into my viewfinder, but before I have had a chance to react or form a judgment. To me, this is a precious fleeting instant that I seek to capture and prolong; my constant objective is to be present enough to capture it. My hope is that my work holds the space for its viewer to dwell in this moment. Catherine Erb’s work has been shown in solo exhibitions across the United States and featured in Architectural Digest, Elle Décor, The New Southern, and Nashville Arts Magazine. She currently resides in Memphis, Tennessee.”
