From the Martin Museum of Art:
“Artist William Downs will bring his work to the Martin this fall for a special exhibition and installation project. Downs will work in the gallery to create a unique wall drawing for the exhibition, along with other completed works to round out the display. Downs, a contemporary American artist based in Atlanta, has a diverse artistic practice that includes drawing, painting, printmaking, and installation. What motivates him most is his unique perspective of “the line,” a fundamental element in art that he explores in a paradoxically surreal manner, pushing the boundaries of its possibilities.
Delving into the concept of the surreal within common forms, Downs transforms them into ambiguous and thought-provoking work that challenges our perceptions. Through the strategic use of repetition, he distorts expectations of the figure, eliciting a sense of unease and intrigue in the viewer. Throughout his work, the form continuously evolves, stretching and taking on new shapes, thus changing the meaning of the form toward the surreal.”
