Joy Reyes: My Quilted Community; The inner lining

“The North Lake Art Gallery is excited to present My Quilted Community; The inner lining a solo exhibition by Joy Reyes. Dallas based artist Joy Reyes uses her mixed media portraits as a love letter to diversity and community. Her portraits evoke reflection of people who may have played a part in or influenced your life. Viewers can practically wrap themselves in warm memories like the fuzzy textures Joy depicts.

“‘My Quilted Community; The inner lining’ Is intended to highlight the fabrication of our communities by capturing immigrants and BIPOC and the beauty of the individual’s intimate life through sharing their unique portraits.

Our neighbors, small owned businesses, our close friend’s mother who loves us like her own daughter, our classmates and their abuelos, the young, new parents and their baby, sisters who are first-generation pave makers and active in creating a better life, and even the community leaders who advocate for those with smaller voices. The people we know, the strangers we don’t. The community we live in is made up of a variety of vibrant patterns, and colorful people. Each of us is cut from a different cloth yet contributes to creating a tapestry that intertwines us together. This is community.”

“Latina-Jewish multidisciplinary artist, Joy Reyes, utilizes the transformative power of art to bridge the gaps between cultures, highlighting social issues and fostering a sense of community. With a keen eye for detail and a deep appreciation for the beauty of diversity, she specializes in creating evocative mixed-media portrait paintings that are intended to resonate with viewers on a personal level.
