August 24 - October 16, 2022
From Studio Comfort Texas:
“Studio Comfort Texas presents a solo exhibition of photographs by Liz Potter entitled Wind+Dust, with an opening reception on Saturday, August 27, from 2:00 to 5:00pm.
Wind+Dust features two different but related bodies of work on view August 24 through October 16—black and white film panoramic photographs depicting self-portraits of the artist integrated into the West Texas environment, and color Polaroid emulsion lifts celebrating the ever-present winds of the rugged region.
“The connective thread of these visually disparate bodies of work is the way I embrace the elements of West Texas,” said Potter. “There is a vast wildness here that makes me want to be part of it, to be playful in it.”
The black and white film panoramic self-portrait series illustrates Potter’s deep connection with the high desert region with its harsh beauty and remoteness. The artist’s presence in these analog photographs lends a sense of time and scale to the vast landscapes—contrasting her soft, impermanent human form with the severe, enduring Chihuahuan Desert.
The color Polaroid emulsion lifts depict motion. They are more about the illusions of wind’s invisible force on the delicate rather than the representational nature of subject matter.
Liz Potter is a self-professed “analog girl in a digital world” and a native Texan. She has a photojournalism degree from University of Texas at Austin. She lives in Alpine, Texas, where she shoots film with a variety of vintage cameras, and processes her photographs in her home darkroom.
