The City of Garland and Garland Cultural Arts Commission, Inc. is seeking a Texas-based qualified artist or art team for the commission of a mosaic to celebrate Garland’s original free-standing Black community, The Flats. The mosaic will be installed in conjunction with other historical markers to educate residents and visitors about The Flats, to recognize the significant contributions this community had on Garland’s development, and to honor the families and businesses who resided there.
The $35,000 commission is to incorporate a minimum of three panels, each 36” by 144”, along the exterior wall at 300 N. Fifth Street. The project will involve community engagement in the design and construction process, and the selected artist or art team will be encouraged to incorporate support from local creatives.
The Flats mosaic helps advance Garland’s efforts in support of its Cultural District designation from the Texas Commission on the Arts.
