The Cake Stand Biennale is an independently organized exhibition founded in Fayetteville, Arkansas by co-organizers Meredith Tinkle (Dallas, TX) and Juliette Walker (Gardiner, Maine) in 2022. During the inaugural biennale, 31 local businesses and Fayetteville landmarks across the city hosted cake stand galleries, featuring the artwork of the 58 participating artists. While many artists were Fayetteville locals, the open call drew in artists from around the world to exhibit their work. This city-wide event celebrated the idea that anywhere could be a gallery and anything could be art. From paper snack sculptures, to traditional functional ceramics, to literal cakes, the Cake Stand Biennale had just about every art medium that anyone could imagine inside the cake stand galleries.
The 2024 Cake Stand Biennale, slated to take place summer 2024, will be a series of synchronized two-part exhibitions, with one half taking place in Juliette’s cake stand gallery in Maine and one half taking place in Meredith’s cake stand gallery in a TBD public location in Dallas, Texas.
The 2024 call is open to solo artists as well as collaboratives who will propose to make a two-part artwork that can be simultaneously displayed in the two separate cake stands—one in Dallas, Texas and one in Maine. The Biennale accepts any media type and the curators will work with accepted artists to help bring their vision to life! Works can be displayed on the stand with the dome or without the dome; creative display methods in/around the cake stands are welcome and encouraged. Artists will cover shipping costs of their work to Maine and Texas, and the cake stand organizers will cover shipping return costs to the artists. Cake stand organizers can also source materials/ingredients locally, should your work require that. If your proposal is accepted and the cost is prohibitive, we will make it work (don’t let that dissuade you from participating!).
The 2024 Cake Stand Biennale will host five exhibitions. While we wish we could host everyone’s work, we don’t have the same capacity that we had in 2022. We will announce our outside jurors in April 2024!
