Reporting to the Director of Museum Collections, this is a part-time (15 hrs/wk), year-round, and non-exempt position. This position is located at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory in Houston, Texas. Strake Jesuit Art Museum is looking to fill this position as soon as possible.
Founded in 1996, the Strake Jesuit Art Museum holds just over 900 objects in the collection including paintings, photography, prints, sculpture, and other objects. Over 500 artworks are currently on display throughout the Strake Jesuit campus. One of only a handful of high school art collections, the Museum’s primary purpose is to serve and enhance the mission of Strake Jesuit College Preparatory in its work to form young men in the Jesuit tradition to be Men for Others.
The hourly rate will be commensurate with experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Collections Assistant will work with the Director of Collections to ensure the smooth operation of the Museum. The main role of the Collections Assistant will be to assist with care of the collections, their use, acquisition, conservation, documentation, cataloguing, and research.
- Assist with exhibition planning, preparation, and installation
- Catalog works into the database following established standards and best practices, and update data and condition reports as needed
- Scan materials and photograph artworks
- Update online records and hard copy files as necessary
- Develop and give tours of the collection
- Research and write didactic materials to support education and public programs
- Work with volunteers and students
- Attend and assist with Museum related events which may sometimes occur outside normal business hours
- Perform collection maintenance including, but not limited to:
- Inventory
- Straighten and dust works on display
- Lightly clean outdoor sculptures
- Create and replace identification labels for artworks
- Assist with planning and event preparation for the Museum’s 30th anniversary celebration in 2026
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
A bachelor’s degree, preferably in Art History, Museum Studies or a related field is highly desirable. Relevant museum or gallery experience, especially in exhibition development, design, and installation, is preferred. The Assistant must have organizational and planning skills with strong attention to detail. The ability to work both independently and as part of a team is critical. Excellent written communication skills and diplomacy are essential. While preference is for a candidate with broad understanding of the history of Western and American art and with museum or gallery experience, research capability and relevant, analogous experience can supplement any gaps in direct knowledge and experience.
Familiarity with the following software preferred:
- FileMaker Pro database
- Adobe Photoshop
- Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
