The Department of Art & Art History invites artists with compelling contemporary practices in any medium to apply for the Borgeson Artist in Residence Program, a twelve-week summer artist residency at Hope College’s De Pree Art Center in Holland, Michigan.
The residency runs from mid-May through mid-August and provides housing, a financial stipend, a personal studio space, and full facility access within the Department of Art & Art History. It concludes with a one-month exhibition at our 2,136 square foot De Pree Art Gallery. The exhibition opens in late-August and runs through September. The residency stipend is paid in two installments, at the beginning of the residency in May, and in September at the close of the exhibition.
The resident artist is expected to produce a strong new body of work for a solo exhibition in De Pree Art Gallery. As part of the residency’s goal to create opportunities for our students and the larger campus community, the department hosts an artist’s lecture, closing reception, and related programming in conjunction with the AIR exhibition in September. The artist is expected to be present in Holland throughout the residency. The artist will also participate in the related programming and engage with students and the broader Hope College community through workshops, critiques, or studio visits.
Details regarding the provided studio space, housing, department facilities and gallery, and past residents can be found on the department’s website.
The selection committee will select the resident artist based on the strength of the artistic concept and utilization of De Pree Art Gallery, description of studio need and usage, past work, and feasibility of the project.
