From San Jacinto Central Campus Art Gallery:
“San Jacinto Central Campus Art Gallery presents Fresh Cut: A Still Life Remix.
The exhibition showcases a series of collages made by Houston-based artist John Forse during a recent residency in Mexico City. Over the course of five weeks the artist pruned photos from a book of fake flower arrangements titled Lo Mejor de Kena Entretenimientos exploring the process of cutting and arranging, like an ikebana of found images.
The collages are set against a backdrop that channels the essence of a tropical rainforest, an impermanent place where things are lost and found, cross-pollinate and mutate. The imprecise collage cuts bring the bouquets to life and are further enhanced by filling the space with sounds of jungle music, a subgenre of electronica that emerged out of the UK in the early 90’s. Characterized by heavy sampling, impossibly fast robotic snares and growling bass tracks; like a sonic collage that acknowledges its artificial nature.
What would one find in a jungle of collage?
What flowers would exist there? What animals? What smells? “
