From Clamp Light Artist Studios and Gallery:
“ARTIST’S STATEMENT:
The act of making a painting requires a leap of faith into the abyss. It is terrifying, and I never know where it will land, but the acceptance of the unknown and my inability to maintain ultimate control over the outcome is, for me, the only viable space in which to work. I attempt to maintain a dialogue with the world on the canvas. Each painting is similar to giving birth; I have given life to this thing, and I have the power to influence and shape it to some extent, yet ultimately must learn to listen and help it become what it needs to be. With each new mark I make, the painting tells me where it wants to go.
Sarah approaches her work from a formal aspect, with process and problems of composition being the emphasis, and avoiding “concept” for as long as possible. However despite this approach, the content of her paintings is rich and far reaching, expanding well beyond the boundaries of formalistic concerns. Sarah’s paintings tell stories. The narrative and subject matter of each remains somewhat allusive, yet she pushes the door open just enough to give the viewer space to walk through. Though each painting is it’s own world, and the subjects vary from the geo-political to the deeply personal, they are unified by Sarah’s self imposed structures of process and palette, and thus create a cohesive body of work. In each painting she is striving to find the tension between composition, concept, and context.
