Pump Project Presents is pleased to announce dROWn, an exhibition of mixed media works by Mark Johnson. These works are part of a continuing series that tracks Johnson’s navigation through transitions in life, career, family and aging. His intensely personal works contain fragments of words, images and symbols, but the complete narrative is a puzzle. When exploring the clues inside each work, viewers can piece together their own personal versions of Johnson’s stories of change, loss, power, fear and love. The exhibition title, dROWn, is a play on words, and a piece of the puzzle itself. The word “ROW”, a word that reminds us to move forward and to keep going is nested inside the word “drown”, a word that implies ultimate consumption and defeat. With concepts like this embedded throughout his work, Johnson compels viewers to consider urgency of action and the necessity to move forward as a way to combat the negative aspects of life.
