2020—Local artist Jessica Fuentes debuts duo means two, a solo exhibition in the Frost Gallery at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center on view from February 29–March 28, 2020. Whether working in photography, mixed media, or narrative writing, Fuentes’ work explores the concepts of time, memory, and repetition. Often she examines these ideas through the display of photographs using transparency or vinyl to physically layer and consequently distort images. In duo means two, it is the process—the repetition of carrying out an idea over a fourteen year period of time and across a variety of locations—that relates directly to the larger themes of Fuentes’ work. The images in this series capture pairings of everyday items from both outdoor and interior scenes. At first glance, the work seems to simply present the mundane coupling of objects. As the viewer looks closer, the repetition of paired items highlights the relationships between the objects and inevitably evokes the complexities of personal relationships.
A longtime Fort Worth resident, Jessica Fuentes is both an artist and art educator. She received a BA in Art & Performance (2004) from the University of Texas at Dallas and a Masters in Art Education with a Museum Certification (2013) from the University of North Texas. Fuentes is a
former member of the F6 Gallery Collective and 500x Gallery. She has exhibited her work consistently in the DFW area for over a decade. In 2016 her solo show Tree House Divided was noted as one of the Top 5 Exhibitions of the year by Fort Worth Weekly. In 2018 her body of work entitled My Only Homeland was featured in Deep Red Press. Currently she is an Artist in Residence at Tarrant County College South Campus. Fuentes is an art educator with over thirteen years of experience. Formerly, she was the Manager of Gallery Interpretation and the Center for Creative Connections at the Dallas Museum of Art. In 2018, she took on the role of Manager of School and Community Outreach at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art. Though much of her passion and work is focused on her local community, she currently serves on the Education Planning Committee at the Smithsonian Latino Center and is the Representative-Elect for the Western Region of the Museum Division of the National Art Education Association. In her downtime she can usually be found with her daughters out in nature, enjoying an art museum, or making art in their home studio. duo means two opens at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center Sunday, February 29 and runs through Saturday, March 28. There will be a closing reception on Spring Gallery Night, Saturday, March 28 from 6-9 p.m.
