“Contemporary art and performance in dialogue with a historic house museum.
The exhibition places ceramicist Ginger Geyer’s contemporary porcelain sculpture in the context of the Neill-Cochran House Museum’s installed historic rooms in order to encourage conversations surrounding issues of race and equity across Austin’s past. Actor Jennifer Cumberbatch has worked with Geyer to develop a narrative overlay through conversation between two adolescent protagonists, (white) Chlora and (black) Ruby Virginia. Cumberbatch will additionally present a series of one-woman performances across the run of the show, taking her inspiration from specific objects on view.
If These Walls Could Talk takes art out of the context of the modern art gallery and places it in conversation with a historic space, to add additional layers of meaning to already complex constructions. The show also has the capacity to be transformational for the city of Austin, which has a problematic record on issues of race and equity that continue to reverberate into the present.”
Featuring Ginger Henry Geyer and Jennifer Rousseau Cumberbatch.
