March 22 - May 3, 2025
From Easyside:
From the Earth to Your Skin showcases the work of interdisciplinary, Dallas-based artist Stacy Xilo. Xilo utilizes natural materials commonly cultivated in Veracruz, where half of the artist’s family resides. Amate (Amatl) is a sort of natural paper made from the bark of trees. Indigenous cultures in Mexico have employed amate as a substrate for writing codices; they even use the fibrous paper for ritualistic purposes. From the Earth to Your Skin reveals Xilo’s use of amate as a conduit for connecting with her family and ancestors. For Xilo, weaving fibers is a radical act of love, community, and resistance against colonial and imperialist systems of domination. As the body keeps score, the Earth, too, remembers.
At the opening reception on March 22, Xilo invites audiences to participate in the paper-making process by contributing ephemera like paper, notes, money, or scraps that you may have in your purse or pocket.
Stacy Xilo: De La Tierra a Tu Piel is curated by Jillian Wendel. Jill met Stacy while being tattooed by the artist last summer. And while on the table, letting her skin consume the ink, she asked Stacy if she’d allow her to curate her work sometime. Nearly a year later, they’re excited to open and celebrate Stacy’s solo exhibition with Easyside, while Easyside is thrilled to invite a guest curator into the exhibition space.
Jill is an independent curator, museum educator, and arts professional splitting their time between Denton and Dallas, TX. Over the last few years, Jill has curated nearly a dozen exhibitions throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area, working with local, emergent, and student artists. Through her work, Jill has found a robust network and community of creatives in North Texas. The Shed Show, founded by Jill, is a backyard project space where she mounts exhibitions in her gable-roofed storage shed in Denton, TX.”
