March 1 - April 12, 2025
From Flatbed Center for Contemporary Printmaking:
“Flatbed is thrilled to exhibit an exclusive exhibition of drawings and prints by Denny McCoy. McCoy has long been a part of the Austin art scene. He regularly exhibited at dberman Gallery in Austin and Wimberley. McCoy is known for his painting practice, but his daily drawing practice is featured in the recently published book, Day to Day. There will be a book signing opportunity with McCoy at Flatbed’s public reception on March 1 from 6 – 8 pm.
The book which is filled with beautiful reproductions of the drawings has essays and other writings by Becky Duval Reese, Catherine Lee, Dana Friis-Hansen, Marc Foxx and Katherine Brimberry. The unique aspect of his daily drawing practice is the spontaneous call and response method he often uses. As the creator of the drawings, he allows them to invent themselves.
“When he walks into the studio, the pages are open and empty. It is early and barely light. Paintings can wait. Picking up a pencil or maybe a brush or pen, he makes one mark, perhaps at random. A mark may sit there for a while and then it calls for another. The next suggests another and from nothing ideas emerge in the form of pigment on a surface.” Katherine Brimberry”
