February 2 - 13, 2025
From Elgin Street Studios:
“The phrase “En boca cerrada no entran moscas” translates to “a closed mouth catches no flies” and encapsulates the delicate interplay between silence, protection, and the unspoken nuances of cultural identity. This proverb underscores the tension between openness and restraint, inviting contemplation on how cultural traditions are shared and safeguarded.
Through the manipulation of materiality, Amy Nava Ruiz constructs work that challenges conventional boundaries of cultural visibility and perception. Employing holographic and abstract visuals, her work creates ephemeral thresholds for audiences unfamiliar with the nuances of Mexican culture, traditions, and identity. This approach evokes a sense of wonder and curiosity while simultaneously asserting boundaries that honor the specificity and narratives embedded within the culture.
This solo exhibition seeks to provoke critical questions about the ethics of cultural consumption and the ways in which traditions are viewed, understood, and respected. It invites audiences to reflect on the balance between appreciation and appropriation, between access and respect, and to confront their own position in relation to the cultural stories and histories being presented to them.”
