From Moody Gallery:
“For three years Nuestra Artist Collective have explored experiences of identity, culture and politics in Texas as it pertains to the female Latina experience through projects involving group exhibitions and community interactions. During 2023-2024, they were awarded the Talley Dunn Equity in the Arts Fellowship which inspired them to work on collaborative art based on the theme of assimilation as it relates to navigating new countries and cultures. In their exhibitionEntre Mundos, the Collective focuses on the broader concept of Nepantla – a space for anyone who has ever felt caught between worlds, identities, or expectations. Inspired by the writings of Gloria Anzaldúa and her concept of Nepantla, this exhibition explores “in-between spaces”—the liminal and transformative realms where identities, cultures, and experiences intersect. Nepantla is a Mexican indigenous Nahuatl word meaning “a space between two bodies of water, the space between two worlds.” For the artists Nepantla serves as a lens through which they examine the complexities of assimilation, migration, and belonging. This exhibition demonstrates how art can illuminate the complexities of the human experience, celebrating the beauty and tension of existing entre mundos—between worlds.
Nuestra Artist Collective is a platform for women artists, including cis and trans women, non-binary and gender non-conforming people, to encourage dialogue about the experiences of Xicana and Latine women. The Collective’s goal is to build connections that support communities and create art projects and exhibitions that explore the intersections of identity, culture, and politics in Texas. Founded in 2021, Nuestra Artist Collective exhibited at the Oak Cliff Cultural Center in 2022 with the Fronteriza project including a community market and information fair, as well as hosting a community conversation about immigration. In 2023 Nuestra exhibited Aqui y alla in San Antonio, TX at Presa House Gallery and was selected to receive the Talley Dunn Gallery Equity in the Arts Fellowship. In 2024, an exhibition followed at Talley Dunn Gallery in Dallas, Texas. The Collective includes artists Michelle Cortez Gonzales, Sara Herrera, Tina Medina, Eliana Miranda, Tesa Morin, and Lupita Murillo Tinnen. Each represents a diverse perspective in various mediums including installation, fibers, painting, photography, video and performance.”
