From the Brownsville Museum of Fine Art:
“*”Faith in the Pilgrimage” showcases the figurative surrealism of Ibtisam Tasnim Zaman, exploring the layers of systemic structures that shape our everyday experiences. Through her work, Zaman reveals the ‘manufactured nature’ in daily life—whether in the mundane commute, the culture of normalization, or the larger societal context. She contrasts these dense realities with intimate portrayals of tenderness, motherhood, and love, positioning them as acts of resistance amidst chaos.
The exhibition title pays homage to the historical journey of sa’i (seeking), symbolizing the spiritual connection between faith in the one God and the blind faith placed in empire. Zaman’s work delves into the intersections of faith within racial capitalism, uncovering how government systems shape and sustain belief. She highlights the universal nature of faith—beyond religion—while questioning its limitations within systems of dominance, consumption, and capitalism.”*
