“The intricate, compact drawings by Charlotte Cosgrove in Predicaments explore situations, crises, experiences and tragic events that may be emotionally or psychologically charged. The imagery depicts daily occurrences or worldly happenings that have an undercurrent of discomfort, alarm or danger beneath their simplistic façades.
Charlotte Cosgrove completed a BA of Applied Art at Pennsylvania State University in 1961 and an MFA in Painting at the University of Pennsylvania in 1962. She also studied Printmaking at the Arts and Crafts Center in Pittsburgh (PA) in 1965. Cosgrove joined the Glassell School of Art faculty in 1967, where she taught Studio and Art History courses until 2024 (MFAH).
Cosgrove had solo exhibitions at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas (Beaumont, TX) in 2009 and at the Ellen Noël Art Museum (Odessa, TX) in 2007. Recently, her work was featured in the group exhibitions Politics of Sex (2023) and Reckless Meditations (2022) at G Contemporary Gallery and The Box (2021) at Hooks-Epstein Galleries. Cosgrove’swork was part of Double Take (2001–2002), a group exhibition that she organized and curated, which originated at Art League Houston and traveled around the state.
The work of Charlotte Cosgrove has been included in various exhibitions throughout Texas and is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, and in numerous private collections. Cosgrove also taught at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston and cofounded a local photography business.”
