October 5 - December 8, 2024
From the Art Museum of Southeast Texas:
“The Art Museum of Southeast Texas (AMSET) is proud to present Harry Ahysen: Devices for Study for its fall 2024 exhibition. The exhibition will be on view October 5 – December 8, 2024.
Harry Ahysen: Devices for Study will be the first solo show of Ahysen’s work since his death in 2006. Ahysen (1928-2006) was born in Port Arthur, Texas and lived most of his life in Texas before moving to Ohio. He was a graduate of the University of Houston and received an MFA from the University of Texas. He retired from his full professor position in 1994 from Sam Houston State University (Huntsville, TX) after teaching for 31 years in the art department. He held the title of Distinguished Professor Emeritus and was the first Professor of Art to be awarded the title. The 67th Legislature of Texas named Ahysen “State Artist of Texas” in 1980. He is also one of ten official Coast Guard artists and seven of his works are a part of the Coast Guard Collection. The theme and title for this exhibition are derived from Ahysen’s published sketchbook/textbook, Composition Devices for Landscape and Seascape Painting (1970). In this dual-purpose book, Ahysen provides sketches and exercises for students to practice perspective, lighting, and overall compositional layout. He divides the book into the categories of Landscape, Light, Cezanne and Dutch Painting Diagrams, and The Sea. The exhibition will include paintings and works on paper that are grouped or paired with enlarged examples of his compositional layout exercises from Composition Devices… to demonstrate Ahysen’s superb technical skills. In addition, biographical information will be presented so that visitors can learn more about Ahysen’s life and accomplishments. An opening reception will take place on Friday, October 11, 2024, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public and includes a gallery talk with Donna Tennant, independent writer for the Houston Chronicle, Arts and Culture Texas, Visual Art Source (LA) and Glasstire. A free gallery guide handout with an essay by Tennant will be available to the public. A free Family Arts Day will take place in conjunction with this exhibition on Saturday, October 19, 2024 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m in conjunction with Museum Madness.
