“All events are free and open to the public. The artist talk will require a RSVP.
Fountains of Imagination draws inspiration from the poetry book “A Coney Island of the Mind” written by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, which explores the challenges of our time via supernatural, playful and distinctly imagined environments. The title of this exhibition is borrowed from the last section of poem 13: “how heaven is, the perfect picture of a monarchy, and there would be no fires burning, in the hellish holes below, in which I might have stepped, nor any altars in the sky, except fountains of imagination.”
These artists present work that is an allegory of modern life, similarly to the poems by Ferlinghetti, each from their own distinct creative perspective.
Exhibitions at the loft are an extension of Agarita’s commitment to reaching new audiences and providing world-class, innovative art experiences, fostering collaborative and vibrant cultural exchange that resonates with the diverse tapestry of the city.
Symone Martinez is a self-taught artist based in San Antonio. She is a wife and mother of 3 kids. She considers herself an illustrator focused more on drawing than on painting. But her work can easily be seen as art that transcends the simple linear stroke. She uses her art as a therapeutic expression of her emotions as well as a way to connect with others. She runs a studio practice at Clamplight gallery, and her work can be regularly found at River Art Gallery, Mockingbird Handprints, Feliz Modern, and Chica’s Boutique.
Dan Soder is an artist known for his raw and unfiltered work. His art embodies emotion and authenticity. Creating vibrant pieces inspired by Mexican Folkart with the use of mix media, emphasizing bright and pure color. Dan ran Adelante restaurant for 40 years, a beloved San Antonio spot for healthful Mexican food until 2022.
Maya Sokovic, born in Belgrade, Serbia, is an artist living and working in San Antonio. She investigates how the memory of people’s interaction with nature and their proximal environment impacts them. Memories evaporate, but linger as a smell, color, shape, or texture. These sensations leave an impression on the body which influences it energetically and physically. Through painting, design and installation, she recreates moments in an attempt to connect with an audience through sensations otherwise forgotten. Her ultimate goal is to show the natural balance that occurs throughout the human experience despite its imperfections.
Ali Wiesse is a San Antonio based artist exploring domestic spaces through drawing and ceramics. A graduate of the Southwest School of Art with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Wiesse’s work is a renaissance of everyday experiences, a meditation on the sacred and mundane aspects of daily life. Through meticulous drawings and expressive ceramic pieces, she examines how rituals shape and reflect our personal and communal identities. Her recent body of work delves into food, preparation, and consumption, in art you can almost smell.
Katy Silva León is a San Antonio based artist who regularly presents her paintings and collaborates with local artists in her studio Flax located in the Blue Star Arts district. She also serves as the Head of Development at the McNay Art Museum. A core component of her professional and personal creative pursuits is in support of access to the arts. She regularly collaborates with creatives who make San Antonio an engaging place it to live, work and play in.”
