From SITE131:
“Dallas’ SITE131 celebrates its 10th anniversary opening Fall season Saturday, September 14, 2024, with Reply All, a solo exhibition featuring billboard-sized paintings by Dallas artist and The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) assistant professor SV Randall. Curated by UTD artist/professor, John Pomara, seven (7) freshly imaged, oversized paintings fill the vast gallery and create airy, wide-open adventures. SITE131’s exhibition completes a year memorializing its founding director, Seth Davidow, who sadly passed away last year.
An oversized painting, Entangled Hunters welcomes visitors as the central painting filling the large-scale floating wall. Six other sizable paintings (60 x 80”) installed under welded metal awning frames constructed by the artist fill the expansive gallery space. In this way, Reply All engages all who enter!
Making colorful, complex, and accessible constructions, Randall wrestles lightly with current aesthetic philosophies. One way to interpret the exhibition title is to say Randall replies to all the crises, philosophies, and aesthetic opportunities that excite him ~ and refers to productions of philosophers, historians, and artmakers,
living and dead.
We see this in his use of free-standing severed limbs (concrete cast hands and a chrome-plated, king-sized ear) and in his use of office chairs in funky sculptures, which suggest the body as a displaced presence.
Randall’s work addresses how our cultural heritage is devalued, ignored, and forgotten amidst the tsunami of digital expression that drowns the modern eye. It suggests how we’re all seduced into an overwhelming present, where assertions of truth or deception have no time to take hold before being replaced by fresher sources of excitement. The “window” into the scene that Hunters gives us is flattened ~ suggesting that what’s come before no longer grants perspective on what happens now. It’s bleached out ~ made monochrome.
Randall says yellow “continually creeps into my work…[It] denotes caution, warning, cowardice, betrayal, and illness… [Yellow] becomes a marker of the precariousness and instability that characterizes our current times.”
Reply All shows at SITE131 through December 14, 2024. An ART CHAT will be scheduled with curator John Pomara and artist SV Randall on a Saturday during the exhibition. Located in the Design District at 131 Payne Street, Dallas, Texas 75207, SITE131 is free and open Fridays from noon ~ 5pm and Saturdays from 1~ 3pm and by appointment with Director Joan Davidow and/or Assistant Stephanie DeLay.
SITE131 will close 2024 in memory of its founding partner Seth Davidow.”
