From La Mecha Contemporary:
“Tauna Cole’s studio research in the last few years has sought to integrate her yoga practice into her art practice. Over the course of time, an embodied practice of visualizing the breath during meditation helped her develop a new language of forms so different from the years of representational painting and drawing. Meditation has taught her to rely more on the body’s intelligence, working from the levels of conscious and subconscious, enabling more trust in the intuitive process. The works in this exhibit are a result of an embodied practice, seeking information through the intelligence of the body and developing the images through the lens of a trained artist who is integrating her spiritual life into her art practice. Breath Body Water exhibition is divided into these three areas. The breath and the body may both be associated with my meditation practice bringing awareness to the sensations in the body when focusing on the breath as well as visual sensations arising from the practice. Water serves as an external source that inspires sitting and watching the movement of shapes and light, another form of meditation. Tauna Cole will execute a performance piece incorporating breath with painting at 2:00 pm on July 20, 2024 at La Mecha Contemporary, 3803 Frutas Ave, El Paso, Tx 79905. Tauna Cole has her BFA in painting from Boise State University and her MFA in Studio Painting from New Mexico State University where she studied under Professor Joshua Rose and Professor Jacklyn St. Aubyn from 1996 – 1999. Until recently Tauna was a College Professor of Art at NMSU where she taught a variety of studio classes and settled into teaching beginning drawing and visual concepts courses. Time outside of teaching involved community volunteer work at the Fountain Theater, serving on the board for the Dona Ana Arts Council and currently, a member of the Border Artists. Tauna is married to artist and high school art teacher, Raul Dorn and share a son, Lowell Dorn. She received her 200 hr. yoga training certificate in June of 2016. Recently retired from teaching at NMSU, she spends her time in the art studio, taking care of family, teaching yoga part-time and serving on the board for a local non-profit, Desert Community Wellness.”
