February 16 - May 1, 2024
From Del Mar College:
“The juried exhibition spotlights new artworks in 2D and 3D media submitted by talented creators around the nation. The 2024 juror, Mark H. Cowardin, is an accomplished sculptor whose work centers on the complex relationship to natural resources embodied by the American Midwest. He will also select the three Purchase Awards that will add work to Del Mar College’s permanent art collection.
“Of the nearly 800 submitted artworks, Cowardin has curated a show that explores the concepts of form, color, and light, and how those elements carry cultural significance,” says Gallery Coordinator Dr. Benjamin Ogrodnik. “While some of the selected artworks tackle global concerns such as pollution and climate change, other pieces are more introspective, reflecting on dynamics of memory and personal experience.”
There are two free public events in conjunction with the exhibition. On Thursday, February 15, 11:00AM, Mark H. Cowardin will deliver a lecture on his artwork, perspectives, and insights as an artist in the Richardson Performance Hall on Del Mar College’s heritage campus. On Friday, February 16, 6-8PM, the exhibition’s opening reception will be at the Cain Memorial Art Gallery. Friday’s reception is free with food catered by Citrus Bistro and a cash bar. At the reception, three prize-winning artworks, selected from this year’s strong and diverse lineup, will be announced.
The 58th Annual National Drawing and Small Sculpture Show runs February 16 through May 1. Gallery hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 9AM – 4PM and on Fridays from 9AM-noon. For further information, visit the gallery website (delmar.edu/gallery) or contact the Art Program at [email protected] or 361-698-1216.”
