From Dallas Center for Photography:
“As part of DCP’s year of Women in Photography, join us in DCP’s gallery on Tuesday, April 18 from 6 to 8 pm for an in-person panel discussion among prominent photographers, artists, and educators discussing the critical role of women in photography.
In its infancy, photography was a comparatively equitable artistic medium for women with many owning portrait studios in the late 1900s. In fact, women have been involved in nearly every major photographic movement of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Despite this, art institutions, scholarship, and collectors favor the contributions of white male photographers and predominantly give voice to their views. This panel offers a unique perspective into the world of photography through the lens of five significant women photographers as they address photography’s complicated past, its role in contemporary society, and where the medium is headed, while providing key insights into navigating this male-dominated field.
Moderated by Texas Vignette president Jessica Ingle, this discussion features local and national guest speakers, including Aline Smithson, a visual artist, editor, educator, and Memory is a Verb participant; Susan Kae Grant, a lens-based artist, educator, and proponent of photographic book arts; Nitashia Johnson, a Nigerian-American multimedia, fine art, and documentary photographer; Meg Griffiths, an artist, educator, and co-founder of A Yellow Rose Project; and educator Allison V Smith, a portrait specialist and fine art photographer.”
