From Webb Gallery:
“This is our third one person exhibit with Max Kuhn of Las Vegas, New Mexico.
Max Kuhn created dozens of primitive wood storyboards, mechanical sculptures, and writings inspired by memories from his youth for this exhibit. Using what at a quick glance could be perceived as pieces found at the local craft show, Max created beautiful dioramas which set the scene for his deeply allegorical examples of discovery, adventure, fear, and pleasure.
The gallery is filled with pieces of tough guys, fishing, and sex where these subjects are used for the parallels of self discovery and excitement which gamble a lead to disappointment or pleasure.
These primarily wooden representations recall folk erotica which is an old tradition of using often simple or humorous erotic scenes and symbols as an approach to the taboo subject matter of sex, but these pieces are of a deeply personal narrative where Kuhn disarms any uncomfortableness through the primitive style.
Classically crafted in wood, paint and mechanics, the pieces are not raunchy but adult in nature. This exhibit is filled with complex artwork of tableaus direct in design and folky in joy.”
